Star-power set to descend on Palmyra Raceway this weekend
No less than 31 ANDRA National Championship Titles are boasted by the field of eight 3,500 horsepower Top Doorslammer machines which will descend upon Palmyra Raceway this Saturday 13 July for the 2013 Slamfest Series Finale.
It will be the first time the Mackay drag racing facility has hosted the Slamfest Series, which is now in its fourth year and sees Top Doorslammer racers from around the country competing across the eighth-mile distance at Australia's regional tracks.
A look at the credentials of those signed up for this Saturday's Series finale provides some impressive figures, including 16 championships held by just one man – Gary Phillips – as well as nine between the father and son team of Victor (six back-to-back titles) and Ben (three titles) and five back-to-back titles for the reigning ANDRA quarter-mile champion John Zappia.
The founder and 2012 Series champion Peter Kapiris also brings a title to the table, and assures race fans throughout Mackay and the surrounding areas that this weekend's action at Palmyra Raceway is not to be missed.
"There is no doubting the pedigree of the racers or the machines that will be hitting the eighth-mile at Palmyra this Saturday," said Kapiris.
"Each and every one of these racers and their powerful Doorslammers are dedicated to racing hard and fast to take the win.
"Add to that the fact that this weekend in Mackay is the final round of our 2013 Slamfest Series, and you have a veritable melting pot of action ready to explode once we get on track this Saturday.
"These are the fastest sedans on the planet piloted by the biggest names in Australian drag racing, and we can't wait to see the fans of Mackay at Palmyra Raceway this weekend for what I guarantee will be a fantastic show for all!"
At Gladstone's penultimate round just two weeks ago, Ben Bray took the event win over Murray O'Connor. Those results saw John Zappia maintain his points lead heading into the final round with 255 points from 2012 Series winner Kapiris (215) while Ben now ties with his father Victor in third with 190 points.
