Grand Opening at the Perth Motorplex

Written by Dave Hunter.

Russell Ladbrook - Top CompRussell Ladbrook - Top Comp (Photo courtesy Gardner Broz)With the 2011/2012 season regarded as one of the best ever with records tumbling in many classes of racing, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Perth Motorplex Grand Opening felt a little flat. After an off-season of rebuilding and planning for a new attack at the track, this is no surprise.

A good case in point of how much the sport is a game of luck and chance would be Competition Bike runner-up Greg Durack.  The ZX12R Turbo Funny Bike has gained a reputation for putting in some stunning low 7 second runs when the planets align.  His Grand Opening was certainly looking grim with the bike cutting out on the launch and a qualifying ET set at 21 seconds.

Stage set for Brays’ season start at Sydney Dragway this weekend

Written by Richard Smith.

Victor Bray - Top DoorslammerFather and son duo Victor and Ben Bray will be looking to make history repeat at Sydney Dragway this weekend as the 2012/2013 Top Doorslammer championship chase begins with the Australian Nationals (2-3-4 November 2012).

The Australian Nationals has been a happy hunting ground for Sidchrome's Team Bray in the past, with Ben breaking through as the youngest ever event winner in 2002 at just 17 years and 2 months of age.

The youngster then went on to win three of the next four outings of the event and claim the 2003 season title - making him the youngest-ever winner of a professional drag racing championship anywhere in the world at the time.

Local racers line up for final 2012 eighth mile hit-out

Written by John Winterburn.

SQEDRS LogoNo less than four home-town racers are in the running for 2012 JP Racing Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series glory as the countdown continues to its final round, to be held at Warwick Dragway on Saturday November 10.

Boosting their competiveness is the fact that the penultimate round of the popular grassroots series was also held at their home track, with track upgrades at the original scheduled venue seeing that event moved to Warwick, creating a series double-header for the facility.

Super Streeter Nathan Jannusch, cousins Matthew and Andrew Loy and drag racing patriarch Ian Ham will all be flying the flag for Warwick amongst an expected field of 110 racers in the final stand for the 2012 championship.

It's all in the start for John Zappia

Written by ANDRA.

John Zappia - Top DoorslammerZappia has made no secret of his desire to overtake Victor Bray's legendary six straight titles in Top Doorslammer before eyeing off Gary Phillips' overall record of seven consecutive professional championships.

"We just need to get a good start this year and put pressure on with our performances, rather than playing catch up through out the season," he said. "We've learned how to run 5.70s and we now need to try and keep there as much as we can."

Since winning the Top Doorslammer championship in June, Zappia's off season has been spent competing at some Slamfest events at regional tracks, which provided him with some leads on a nagging tyre shake problem.

Athol Williams – The Flying KIWI

Written by Kym Oberauer.

Athol Williams - the flying KIWIAthol Williams - the flying KIWI (Photo courtesy John Morris)Athol Williams has always had a passion for bikes. You can hear it in the way he speaks and assumes you know what he's talking about. From a Suzuki 125 Stinger, to a RD350 Yamaha, to a Honda 750k1 and up to a Kawasaki 900, Athol rattles off the street bikes he's owned and the mods he's made.

It's a blur of brand names and parts that are completely foreign to me. Luckily we steer the conversation back towards drag racing before he works out that I'm completely out of my depth.

Athol's first introduction to drag racing was watching Ray Peterson in the early 70s roar down New Zealand's Champion Dragway on his supercharged Triumph and later a Nitro Honda. That's when he decided he "wouldn't mind having a crack at this drag racing caper."
