Allan Dobson 2012 NationalsThe tough, USA-experienced Rapisarda Racing outfit will be out to stop Darren Morgan's championship charge come this weekend's third round of the ANDRA Top Fuel championship at Perth Motorplex.

The team again has gun driver Allan Dobson at the wheel, expecting to repeat the 4.6 second form that carried them to a win at the Fuchs Winternationals in June.

With Morgan looking to rack up a nitro hat trick, Rapisarda team manager Santo Rapisarda Jnr said there has been little rest since returning from the USA to prepare to take on the reigning national champion as well as the potent Phil Lamattina and winner of the last event in Perth, Mark Sheehan.

Murray Oconnor - 2012 GoldenstatesANDRA Top Doorslammer pilot, Murray O'Connor has smashed through the 6-second barrier with an amazing performance at last weekend's Goldenstate Titles at the Perth Motorplex.

The long time racer took an aggressive approach to the first round of qualifying with the car's tune-up and had to modulate the throttle over the pass with the carbon-bodied XM Falcon recording a strong 6.13-second pass at 236mph.

The second session saw the track cool a little, and with a small tweak to the tune-up, the Falcon scorched to a new personal best time and the first ever 5-second pass for the team with a 5.99 second run at 238mph.

Roy Romeo - Southern Super Gas Series leaderRoy Romeo - Southern Super Gas Series leaderA sterling driving job at the 2012 Australian Nationals by Roy Romeo in the family's Super Gas Commodore resulted in him leading both the Southern Super Gas Series and the ANDRA Aeroflow Championship and taking home the coveted gold Christmas tree.

A first round double breakout win against top qualifier Warren Smith earned him the bye into the semi-finals where he took out Adelaide's Bruno Romeo before defeating current Australian Super Gas Champion Simon Isherwood in the final.

The Southern Super Gas Series allocates points for round wins but uses a unique method of allocating qualifying points based on the average of the qualifying time across all three sessions. Sydney racer Darryl Stephen in his Ford probe had the best average being 0.001 from the 9.90 index and Dave Gauldie and Roy were equal second with an average 0.002. Victorian Colin Griffin was a further thousandth away with a 0.003.

The 8000 horsepower nitro dragsters of Top Fuel are crossing the desert expanses of Australia in readiness to attack Perth Motorplex this Friday and Saturday night in what will be a crucial round of the ANDRA Drag Racing Series.

The season opened in Adelaide with Darren Morgan defeating Phil Lamattina before moving on to Sydney for the Australian Nationals where the same result occurred. Now the teams make the gruelling trek across the continent to Western Australia for round three.

The "Mildura Missile" Morgan comes into the event as a hot favourite. Not only is the Victorian the reigning national champion, but he has opened his 2012/13 series in near perfection with two event wins. Running in all black livery without a major sponsor, Morgan has demonstrated great consistency, not yet having to abort a run in eliminations, a credit to young gun crew chief Ben Patterson. Morgan made the final the last time Top Fuel was in Perth, losing to upstart Mark Sheehan. He did however top qualify and run the quickest time and highest speed of the event.

Victory Bray - Adelaide International RacewayVictory Bray wins all Bray final at Adelaide International RacewayDrag racing stalwart Victor Bray has stepped into the winners' circle for the second time in as many weekends, taking victory in a father versus son final at Adelaide International Raceway's anniversary invitational on Saturday evening.

The result tops off a massive two weeks for the six-time Top Doorslammer champion, who on November 17 celebrated a breakthrough win over reigning champion John Zappia at the Perth Motorplex's Goldenstates championship event.

This weekend the drag racing veteran was not alone however, with a special guest along for the ride in his Sidchrome Team Bray Racing 1957 Chevy.

"When we were in Adelaide earlier this month I met a couple of local guys who asked to sign a picture of a mate of theirs who had recently passed away," said Bray.

This year proved to be no exception to that rule, with Top Doorslammer and Top Alcohol featuring for the second year in a row.

T/D qualifying included a number of new faces testing their might on the national stage, hoping to spring in a few surprises and put a dent into the regular competitors' campaign. The first session saw the Zap, Kap and Fab trio showing their well-timed setups and getting a good leg-up on the field; John Zappia's 5.869, Peter Kapiris' 5.876 and Maurice Fabietti's 5.894 leading the way. Other notable session times saw Victor Bray pop in a respectable 6.020 and Pat Carbone very close behind with a straight and true 6.035 to put in a potentially interesting race day appearance if it stood up to the tough opposition.

Victor Bray wins Goldenstates over old sparring partner ZappiaVictor Bray wins Goldenstates over old sparring partner ZappiaOld sparring partners Victor Bray and John Zappia matched up again at Perth Motorplex on Saturday night with Bray emerging as the upset winner in round two of the ANDRA Top Doorslammer championship.

It was a night to remember for Bray, with the Queensland-based tomato farmer also running his first ever five second passes, a 5.96 in the semi finals backed up with a 5.95 in the final.

The finals match up of Bray, a six times champion, and Zappia, a five times champion, had the crowd salivating. When Zappia got loose early in his run Bray was able to stretch the legs of the Sidchrome 57 Chev through to the finish line and his first win since September 2006.

"It is great to win again, it feels terrific, it gives everyone an uplift," he said. "It's been tough with the way John Zappia and all the boys have stepped up over the years."
