Reigning Top Fuel champ ready to rumble in Adelaide

Written by Kym Oberauer.

Darren Morgan - Top Fuel AdelaideAdelaide will come alive to the sound of 8,000 horsepower nitro burning engines this Saturday as reigning champ Darren Morgan rolls into town for the 1st round of the ANDRA Top Fuel Pro Series.

Back in April 2012, Darren took out the inaugural Pro Series 1000 event at Adelaide International Raceway and is looking to repeat the feat this weekend, when the team goes head-to-head with Top Fuel pilots Phil Lamattina, Luke Shepherd and Queensland's Steve Read.

“The team and the car are ready to rock,” said Darren. “All the long hours in the workshop preparing for this event will be worth it when the throttle cracks open for the 1st time in front of a packed house of fans.”

How much is your head or neck worth?

Necksgen - Head and Neck RestraintsNecksgen - Head and Neck RestraintsWhen I decided to make the move into Super Stock, one of the first things I was aware of was upgrading my safety gear to comply with ANDRA rules for vehicles faster than 7.50 seconds.

On the vehicle side of things Jerry Haas Race Cars took care of the chassis which is built to comply with SFI standard 25.1E. Jerry also fitted a 5Lb fire system that is plumbed into the engine bay and drivers compartment, just in case.

ANDRA rules state, that a Neck Collar is required in all vehicles quicker than 7.50 seconds (1/4 mile) or 4.90 seconds (1/8 mile) and the use of proprietary head and neck restraint systems are permitted where the device meets SFI 38.1

Ali will get his chance to defend championship

Written by ANDRA.

Michael Ali - Pro StockMichael Ali - Pro StockReigning Pro Stock champion Michael Ali has had things fall into place just in time to be able to contest the opening round of the ANDRA Drag Racing Series at his home track of Adelaide International Raceway in little over a week's time.

Ali's home track debut was looking uncertain with no engine in the workshop, up until recent days when the powerplant for his SA Constructions Pontiac GTO arrived back.

"Things came together on the engine side of things just in time," he said. "If there was no engine there would have been no racing. If I pull my finger out we will get it happening and be alright.

"We just had the engine freshened up so we can safely go again. We've done all last season on it so it was due to come out."

Sydney Dragway - good times ahead for Australia’s quickest sport

Written by Kym Oberauer.

Ray Treasure - Sydney Dragway Venue and Events ManagerRay Treasure - Sydney Dragway Venue and Events ManagerWhen Sydney Dragway opened its gates for the first time back in 2004, drag racing starved spectators flocked to the venue.

I distinctly remember towing back down the return road and looking out the window to see fans leaning over the fence clapping and cheering. What was even more amazing, they were clapping and cheering for me, a middle aged man driving a Camira in everyone's favourite bracket Super Gas!

Times changed. From the initial fan fare, the popularity of the venue dropped noticeably in subsequent years. The friction between track management and the racers and the loss of numerous events to wet weather both contributed to the general decline.

Jess Turner – a bright young star ready to burn rubber

Jess Turner – a bright young star ready to burn rubberSpring is finally here and a young ladies thoughts turn to... DRAG RACING!

Huh? That’s not right is it? ...for Jess Turner it is.

Jess isn’t your average 17 year old though. Sure she likes hanging out with her friends and all that teenage girl stuff, but Jess is equally at home putting on a race suit, strapping on a helmet and getting behind the wheel of a 650 horsepower dragster, capable of reaching speeds of over 270kph.

After 2 years in the Junior Dragster ranks Jess is making the move to Modified, one of the most competitive classes in drag racing. But don’t think for a second she’ll be 1st round fodder.
