Top Fuel champion Darren Morgan to race funny car in Portland

 

Four-time Australian Top Fuel Champion Darren Morgan will make his nitro tour debut early next year, racing an Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car at FUCHS South Coast Raceway on January 3.

Morgan will take the wheel of ‘The Bandit’ Trans Am, with the livery based on the iconic Pontiac Trans Am driven in the 1977 classic Smokey and the Bandit.

Naturally, Morgan is excited to get behind the wheel, with the Funny Car previously raced at Sydney Dragway’s Night of Fire by Aaron Hambridge.

“Getting in the funny car will be a new experience after spending so many years racing Top Fuel dragsters,” smiled Morgan, who is currently on a hiatus from ANDRA's top Group 1 category.

“The Bandit was the quickest and fastest car in Sydney, so we have a bit of a hot rod on our hands! I know we can rustle some feathers with some of the regulars!”

Aeroflow series manager Steve Bettes is excited by what the ANDRA Top Fuel star can bring to the sport.

“He’s obviously a great driver and he’s also a great person to have in the pits, he has plenty of knowledge and of course plenty of fans!” Bettes said.

“This is a great part of the year to run this event, close to the beach and with so much to see and do, it’s worth the trip even if you’re not local.

“The team from South Coast Raceway do an amazing job and it’s great to be able to put this event together with them.”

“We will have the full calendar announced shortly but this is the perfect way to kick off the year!”
