ANDRA Championship drag racing returns to Victoria

Written by Kym Oberauer.

South Coast Raceway - Drivers and Riders BriefingANDRA Championship drag racing returns to VictoriaIt's been few weeks now and the smoke has cleared and dust settled on the 1st ever eighth mile ANDRA Championship event in Australian drag racing history.

To say the weekend was a success would be downplaying the positive impact the event had on the racers and drag racing in general.

ANDRA CEO Mal Bulley was on hand for the event and was full of praise for South Coast Raceway." It was a great atmosphere all weekend and a fantastic initial experience on taking the Aeroflow Sportsman Championship to Regional Victoria. The club did an exceptional job, special congratulations must go to the Cleary family, event staff, volunteers and ANDRA staff who made this possible."

I [Kym] personally spoke with the finalists from each bracket last week and the message was the same; we had a great time, the event was fantastic and we'll be back again.

The USA Jet Dragsters made their 2013 debut at the latest Perth round, The Night of Fire. The predicted weather of 40 degrees wasn't looked happily upon during the week. But on the day the weather missed the mark and 'only' 34 degrees was reached, making for a slightly cooler day but still making a scorching hot 50 degree track temperature.

Our kerosene burning feature consisted of a "best out of 3" race format with Curt White taking out all three of the races with sub 6 second passes, as Chuck Haynes was still learning the in and outs of his brand new car.

While Curt won 3 zip, he did have some bad luck when his parachute failed on the final pass, sending him rocketing (or should that be jetting) into the sand traps at somewhere close to 250mph, coming to a stop at the 2nd safety net.

After the event, The crowd of the Motorplex was dazzled by a Fireworks display to finish the night.

LTFR will add 60foot power for Perth

Lamattina Top Fuel Racing60foot joins Lamattina Top Fuel Racing (Photo courtesy Gardner Broz)Lamattina Top Fuel Racing (LTFR) has added another sponsor to the ranks, with clothing brand '60foot' joining the team for the final round of the 'western swing' held at the Perth Motorplex, February 1 and 2.

The Australian-based clothing brand has strong links to drag racing with its merchandise range and supporting the fastest cars in the sport was a natural fit.

LTFR driver and team boss, Phil Lamattina was pleased to confirm the partnership.

"We are really happy to have 60foot on-board with the team. 60foot is a young brand and it's great to see them support drag racing at all levels."

"Let's not forget that 60foot gives away prizes at each Aeroflow Drag Racing Series round to the junior dragster driver with the best reaction time and closest to dial in 'package' during eliminations."

As you would have read on the Just Drag Racing Website I was runner up at the Portland round of the ANDRA Sportsman Championship series last weekend to Craig Geddes. I desperately needed points after not earning any in Sydney with the broken transmission and had high hopes for the weekend of winning the meeting and resetting both the ET and MPH record. I came close with both of the records and a runner up.

Leading into the meeting there were 6 vehicles entered for Super Stock and it was understood that we would be running on our own and not being combined to run Super Comp. A closer look at the rule showed 6 vehicles needed to attempt qualifying (only 5 had turned up to qualify) and even though there were 9 vehicles entered Competition ANDRA combined the two classes to make Super Comp.

Venue ownership change delays return to Melbourne

Written by ANDRA.

ANDRAThe ANDRA championship rounds of Top Doorslammer, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle for Calder Park in February have been cancelled, due to the recent change in ownership of the history-steeped Melbourne venue.

The short time frame after the recent change in ownership of Calder Park caused a logistical challenge that would have been difficult to overcome in the time available.
