Parker prepares for the Westernationals

Written by Darren Parker.

This is due to the next race meeting being 2 months after Portland, in Perth on the 2nd and 3rd of March and lots of time to get everything done.

Normal activity after a race meeting is to get straight onto stripping the car down and checking everything is ok and working out what needs to be done to get ready for the next race meeting. As you know from my last update this was a pretty faultless meeting on the cars behalf so compared to recent times there wasn't much work required.

First order of work was to get onto Peter Ridgeway and have a set of headers built in the USA for the new engine. The old Gebbler Tri-Y headers I had on the old motor were originally off a 358ci Pro Stock truck motor and are a little small for our 400ci motors, although they perform very well.

From 11.00am to late, the Victorian track dubbed 'The best little drag strip in OZ" will feature not only eight of the country's fastest 'doored' cars but also a packed field of Supercharged Outlaw racers plus six Dial Your Own race categories.

Now entering its fourth year, the Slamfest Series sees Top Doorslammer racers from around the country competing across the eighth-mile distance at Australia's regional tracks.

"This weekend at Portland Raceway is destined to be one of the best in the 2013 Slamfest Series," said Series co-organiser and 2012 series champion, Peter Kapiris'.

Top Fuel Fire - Allan DobsonTop Fuel fire for Allan Dobson (Photo courtesy Gardner Broz)The debut of the new racing format for Top Fuel at the appropriately named Nitro Max was a huge success, which completely packed the Perth Motorplex on both evenings. Friday served up some brilliant qualifying action and a few thrills which was then topped off by Saturday's sunshine and smiles on the faces of racers, crew and spectators as eliminations begun.

Top Fuel got off to a fiery start from the first pass on the Friday evening, with Mark Sheehan the only driver to put down a representative pass of a 5.12 at 221 mph.

Friday Eliminations saw Sheehan run a solo into the B Final and Harris and Lamattina defeating their opponents of Morgan and Dobson to enter the A Final.

Lamattina's win in the final of the Friday round was one of the standout races of the ANDRA Championship season. The Fuchs-powered dragster used a reaction time advantage to help edge ahead of Damien Harris with the carrot king's 4.73-second pass getting the win light over Harris' 4.77 pass.

With the team's first win this season coming after three consecutive finals appearances, Lamattina also took the points lead in the ANDRA Championship chase.

With a large amount of those coming from out of town, local racer Sarah Glanville is looking forward to the chance to race against unfamiliar faces at what she calls her 'second home'.

"My favourite part about the Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series is that it gives me the chance to race at my home track against competitors who usually wouldn't come out to Warwick," said Glanville, who competes in the RD Williams Excavator Parts Modified Bracket.

"It really is a great series, and I am so glad it takes in Warwick Dragway – it is my home track, my home away from home, most of the time even if I am not racing that is where you can find me!"

Lamattina doubles up in winning weekend

Lamattina Top Fuel - Perth 2013Lamattina doubles up in winning weekendPhil Lamattina pulled off the double win at Perth Motorplex last night, taking out the fifth round of the ANDRA Top Fuel championship in addition to his round four win on Friday night.

Running the new format for the first time, where two championship rounds are held over two consecutive days, Lamattina proved unstoppable across the weekend. He took victory with a slowing 5.49 over a tyre smoking Damien Harris, who also made the final for the second time in a weekend.

The win extended Lamattina's championship lead over second placed Darren Morgan to 40 points.

"It is a lead but it's only a marginal one, we only have to slip up and Darren could be right on our tail again," Lamattina said.

Lamattina seizes championship lead in Perth

Mark Sheehan - Top Fuel FireballMark Sheehan puts on a fireworks displayA thrilling final in round four of the ANDRA Top Fuel championship at Perth Motorplex saw Phil Lamattina take the points lead in the championship as a new format kept the crowd on the edge of their seat.

The Victorian defeated a returning Damien Harris, 4.73 to 4.77, in a tight race where the Fuchs team used a big speed of 514kmh to edge the Best Tractor Parts outfit.

The event was the first using a new 'double header' format with individual rounds of the championship over consecutive days and Lamattina is keen to repeat his efforts on Saturday.

"It's great for the championship for us to take the points lead, the car is pretty strong so we will see what we can do tomorrow," he said. "The strategy was always to put a tune up in it that would work and go from A to B; the car is just on song.
