Southern Super Gas Series showdown in Sydney

Written by Souther Super Gas Series.

Super Gas ShowdownAt the conclusion of the scheduled final round at Portland for the Southern Super Gas Series, the series remains tied with Kym Oberauer and Matt Forbes on 220 points. Rather than split the DJ chute from Motorsport Connections and the Lucas Oil Products from Fast Time Design, Kym and Matt have agreed that the winner of the 2012/2013 Southern Super Gas Series will be decided in early May at the Sydney Dragway Nitro Champs.

With the on-going co-operation of Ray Treasure from Sydney Dragway they will be paired in the final qualifying session for Super Gas.

Kym Oberauer Super GasIn hot and dusty conditions at Adelaide International Raceway Kym Oberauer drove his Camira to an outstanding win in a double breakout final against Renee Cockerill in her Ford roadster. This repeated his performance at the Portland ANDRA Aeroflow round.

Going into the Adelaide round series leader Matt Forbes needed to go rounds to consolidate his lead but was that was dashed when he was taken out by event runner-up Renee Cockerill in the first round. However with the points gained from having the best average qualifying ET with an average of 9.924 this gave him sufficient points to tie with Kym Oberauer for the series lead.

Ballistic Performance race report - Aeroflow Champs round 2

ballistic logoBallistic Drag Racing travelled to Portland for the Aeroflow Sportsman Championship round on January 5th and 6th 2013 at South Coast Raceway. Just 400km from where we live, we drove on a 40 deg day which was not pleasant. We arrived at the track around 8pm, unloaded and got set for racing the next day.

Siblings ready to race for eighth mile honours at Warwick Dragway

Oberg Brothers - Junior DragsterOberg brothers ready to battle it out in Junior DragsterIt is often said that the family that plays together, stays together. This is certainly an adage the Oberg family has taken to heart with mum and dad overseeing their sons competing in the sport of drag racing.

Caleb (14) and Ethan (10) have each been racing in the Junior Dragster bracket since the age of eight and will be part of the action at Warwick Dragway on 9 February 2013 when it hosts the opening round of the 2013 JP Racing Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series.

While the family attributes the sport to strengthening their relationship, sibling rivalry does at times come into play.

"I hate racing my little brother – I don't like beating him, but at the same time I don't want to get beaten by him because then he and all my friends tease me about it," said Caleb, who in 2010 became the youngest ever Australian Drag Racing Champion when he took out the Junior Dragster national title.

Cassar ready to go ballistic

Ballistic Performance PartsBallistic Drag Racing has not had the start we wanted in 2012. The Nationals in November was the first meeting back in BB/CB after our bad luck in March so I was a little bit nervous. We had done some passes at Heathcote Park and everything was okay so we went to the Nationals with some confidence.

While it's been a frustrating wait, a runner-up to current point's leader Luke Marsden at the recent Aeroflow round in Adelaide was an excellent result for the cars first competitive hit out.

Gone but not forgotten

With the old car gone it was time to look for a new car. The search didn't take long, and on September the 12th, 2012 (which also happened to be father's day), the team's new altered was purchased from Stan and Nola Tindal in NSW.

Adelaide's Bruno Romeo had a stellar event as he top qualified and then won the event. Matty Forbes qualified second and once again was the bridesmaid with another runner-up finish but this was enough to give him the series lead.

Newcomer to the series Danny Buccella had the best average qualifying ET with an average of seven thousandths under the 6.30 index followed by Matt with a fifteen hundredths over average.

The MSCN awards where raffled with the South Australians cleaning up as Lance Larcombe went home with the tyre gauge and Danny Bucella with the Brad Penn oil.

With a large amount of those coming from out of town, local racer Sarah Glanville is looking forward to the chance to race against unfamiliar faces at what she calls her 'second home'.

"My favourite part about the Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series is that it gives me the chance to race at my home track against competitors who usually wouldn't come out to Warwick," said Glanville, who competes in the RD Williams Excavator Parts Modified Bracket.

"It really is a great series, and I am so glad it takes in Warwick Dragway – it is my home track, my home away from home, most of the time even if I am not racing that is where you can find me!"

Darryl Stephen takes the lead in the Southern Super Gas Series

Darryl Stephen - Super GasDarryl Stephen takes the lead in the Southern Super Gas Series (Photo courtesy Dragpix)While there were only 6 Super Gas entries there was some very interesting racing by all reports. Even though he is still sorting out his Camira, Kym Oberauer stepped up to run Super Gas to make up the field after initially intending to run Super Sedan. It was a very impressive performance to win the bracket and check out his average qualifying ET where for the three qualifying sessions he averaged 6.300 on a 6.300 index.

The bracket also had great support from Darryl and Anthony as they both made the long haul from Sydney to Portland in the heat and hopefully the NSW fires didn't cause them any grief on the trip home. While Anthony went out in the first round Darryl made it to the semi-finals but that earned him enough points to take the lead in the series.

Matt Forbes - Super GasMatt Forbes is sparing no expense to take a shot at the Super Gas title (Photo courtesy Fred Dwyer)Ballarat drag racer Matt Forbes is sparing no expense to take a shot at the Super Gas title come the Aeroflow Sportsman Drag Racing Championship at Fuchs South Coast Raceway in Portland on January 5 and 6.

Forbes said the car suffered from a mysterious lack of horsepower at the Australian Nationals recently in Sydney and the team has been going over his Lucas Oil Products hot rod one piece at a time to find the gremlin.

"We stripped the car, had the motor back on the dynamometer, rebuilt the transmission, refitted the fuel system - you name it, we did it," he said. "We have also had a new configuration torque converter built for it and this seems to have cured our issues. We feel very confident that now we have these issues out of the way our season will really take off from here."
